Why Natural Refrigerants?

Natural refrigerants are a natural, sustainable alternative to commonly used hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants (HFCs).

Natural refrigerants - including carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, and ammonia - have zero or near-zero global warming potential (GWP), and even have the potential to reduce energy, gas, and water consumption. Transitioning to climate-friendly natural refrigerants is one of the single most effective ways to permanently reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and is considered one of the most cost-effective climate mitigation strategies available.

What’s more, due to their well-understood, negligible impact on the environment, natural refrigerants are a “future-proof” option for supermarkets amid increasing refrigerant regulations.

Paving the Way for Natural Refrigerants

Unfortunately, natural refrigerants are associated with a unique set of market barriers that have prevented their widespread adoption, such as upfront cost premiums, a shortage of workforce training, and a lack of performance data.

Eliminating the barriers to natural refrigerant adoption is the key to making natural refrigerants a feasible business choice for supermarkets and unlocking their tremendous climate potential.

NASRC is working in partnership with the industry to drive solutions on the data, resources, and support supermarkets need to feasibly adopt natural refrigerants.

What You Can Do

Despite the importance of this topic, very few people are aware of it. Awareness is the key to accelerating progress. So please, help us spread the word and join the Naturally Cool Movement.

We launched The Naturally Cool Movement to bring the impact of refrigerants into the public spotlight and drive broad support for climate-friendly natural refrigerants. You can contribute by increasing awareness, and together we can make a meaningful climate impact. Read more.
